What is Pistanthrophobia

Pistanthrophobia is a mental health condition that is characterized by a fear of trusting others, due to past experiences such as emotional abuse, betrayal in a relationship, and hurt or lies. Unlike other phobias, pistanthrophobia is a deep-rooted, intense fear of being cheated by others or emotionally harmed again. People with such a phobia believe that trusting others will eventually lead to betrayal and emotional pain.

Pistanthrophobia uses the Greek words Pistis (to trust) and Phobos (to fear), signifying a phobia of putting trust in people. It is a phobia that is likely to develop when one is betrayed, deceived, or faces emotional trauma. It is associated with a fear of intimacy.

Although pistanthrophobia is not an official diagnosis in the DSM-5, it is often described as a specific phobia in psychology. Specific phobias fall under the category of anxiety disorders. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the prevalence of specific phobia among US adults is 9.1% with higher rates in females than in males. On a global scale, specific phobias affect about 6–8% of people annually in Western countries, compared to 2–4% in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Causes of Pistanthrophobia

Pistanthrophobia is commonly associated with traumatic experiences of the past, especially being betrayed or hurt in intimate relationships. When a person has been fooled, betrayed, or emotionally damaged by someone they trusted, it can cause lasting wounds that develop a fear of being cheated again. Pistanthrophobia stems from several other factors that may predispose one to a persistent or irrational fear of trusting others.  These causes may vary from person to person.

  • Childhood abuse: Children who grew up in a toxic environment or experienced neglectful and absent behavior of their parents may develop an inability to trust in the future.
  • Emotional and physical abuse: Experienced a toxic relationship, verbal and physical abuse may develop a fear of creating deep bonds.
  • Personality Traits and Anxiety Disorders: Perfectionism, an over-possessive nature, or an existing anxiety disorder may also contribute to trust phobia.
  • Bullying: Experiencing bullying, public humiliation, and rejection may cause a fear of rejection.
  • Repeated Lies and Dishonesty: Experiencing repetitive lies and dishonesty from a partner or friends can break the trust and create lasting doubts.
